Project 1
Point + Line
Plane + Void
Exploration and Process
This project presented many opportunities to explore how spaces are thoughtfully made.
In the final PDF I stated that I made 4 drafts before the final product, however the number was closer to 6. It's just that the 4 official ones were what impacted my decision for the final product.
Each model served to explore or develop ideas. The four official drafts were to explore material, flow, colour and plane sizes. The other two were to experiment with shape and pattern but they were very rough ideas and I couldn't personally call them drafts due to how they were so rough looking.
Reflection
I actually had a lot of fun with this project as I like making model (albeit not very good at them).
My materials were limited to skewer sticks, A3 drawing paper, polystyrene (as the base), butter paper, sewing string and copious amounts of uhu glue, super glue and latex gum.
The design thinking process for this was a little more challenging as I had free reign to base my design from scratch. Personally, I work best when there are guidelines to work with so when I got to know that the only guidelines are to use planes, strings and sticks, I felt lost.
I overcame this problem by starting a mood board. I collaged pictures of all the buildings that inspire me to study architecture in the first place. From there, I selected three of the buildings that I found to be the most intriguing and then analysed the reasons for why I liked them. From there, I did some research and found out about movement and rhythm in architecture (which ironically turned out to be the topic of the next project).
Skills I've acquired/refined/learned:
Intrapersonal skills
~Only trust the lecturer for any answers to my question
~Plan a schedule to get things done so I am always on time, especially since the duration of this project is only 2 weeks
Thinking and Problem Solving skills
~After making each draft, I had to find faults in my own work. This was particularly difficult as it is easy to criticize other's work but not one's own.
~After identifying the flaws in my work I had to find solutions which was arguably easier than finding problems. I had to think of how I can place a plane to reflect light into the space, how air would flow through the structure, what material can let in light but also keep the interior dry from rain water.
Lifelong Learning
~Learned from past mistakes, in this case it is the drafts
~I had to come up with ideas from scratch and develop them individually as this project is different to every pupil
